A vaginal sling or mesh is a medical device that is implanted along the walls of the vagina to help increase bladder control and provide comfort and relief from pain caused by vaginal prolapse, and other certain medical conditions.
There are a variety of vaginal sling and mesh devices that have been discovered to cause serious complications such as: Mentor OB Tape, Avaulta Mesh, and the Gynecare Prolift. These devices have been shown to cause serious complications and the FDA has issued warnings and many of these and other devices have been recalled.
FDA warnings, which began in late 2008, came from thousands of report on failed transvaginal mesh system procedures that have a documents wide range of serious complications:
- Infection
- Inflammation
- Deformation and scarring of vaginal tissues
- Permanent nerve damage
- Pelvic pain
- Pain during sex
- Vaginal and/or rectal problems
- Mesh erosion or extrusion
Additionally other symptoms may include urinary problems and bladder, bowel and blood vessel perforation during insertion. Vaginal scarring and mesh erosion is extremely painful and severely impacts these women’s quality of life.
As the FDA has initialed recalls on many of these vaginal sling and mesh devices, many women have sought legal assistants in filing personal injury lawsuits for compensation for the pain and suffering endured, lost wages, and the additional medical bills from surgeries to correct complications from vaginal mesh implants.
Women who have been implanted with a defective vaginal mesh are outraged, and with good reason. These devices were designed to prevent pelvic organ prolapse, which can occur in women after childbirth or surgery. Unfortunately, the women affected by this defective product simply traded one dangerous condition for another.
Many victims of this product defect are finding it hard to come forward. Many feel embarrassed and depressed due to their seemingly endless number unfortunate events that unfold one after the other. If you feel this may be you, please visit your doctor and fully disclose the extent of your pain and discomfort. Things may seem like they can’t get worse, but they aren’t going to get better until you seek proper treatment physically and psychologically.
